I met Bill and interacted with him occasionally, over a short period of a year, when I was a program assistant at a grantmaker where he was awarded a major fellowship. I loved learning the stories of his unique creative career and vision. He was so vibrant, very present, and also quite generous. He gave me two small ceramic bowls that had been made by other artists. I imagine that he was very supportive of his fellow artists and probably had a stockpile of items created by others that he had purchased from them, or that they had given him. These two objects are treasured items in my home and remind me of the remarkable and inspiring man. May Angels fly alongside him! -- AC

One of the finest professors and ceramic artists that I am fortunate to say I was able to study with at Philadelphia College of Art. An amazing and generous man with a unique sense of humor. A genuinely kind spirit who very often opened his home and his heart to his students. The art world has permanently shifted with his passing.

I'm very sorry for the great loss of William Daley. I was one of his students from 64-68 and spent a great deal of classtime and studio time. Bill was my teacher, my mentor, my friend. He was truly a master teacher, draftsman and sculptor. After PCA I went onto Tyler and studied under Winokur and Staffel, wow. After grad. school I got a job as a prof.at a college in Michigan, I based my teaching on Bill the Maestro. I also had the opportunity of working with Bill in his home studio on some of his projects.

In 1980 Mr. Daley was my 3D professor at Philadelphia College of Art. From him, I learned the most. Like an act of magic, he made me “see” and “feel” tridimensionality in my mind. But what I treasure the most is the joy for life, the generosity with which he shared his knowledge and the respect he showed for us as students. His love for clay and how he savored the opportunity to communicate to us all what he felt about art and life and craft…that I will also carry with me and I always try to emulate when I teach. Mr. Daley is the perfect example of how we can make the world a better place … I am just one of thousands and the ripples in the water of life are still happening. I have to add the many group visits to More than Just Ice Cream. To his family, my wishes of serenity and strength.

After the blizzard of 1996, I awoke late one morning to find my neighbor, Bill Daley, shoveling my hatchback out of 2.5 feet of snow. At 45 years my senior he had more determination and unmitigated good will than anyone I knew - and certainly more energy than me on a cold winter morning.
Much love to his family and friends,
Juliette Cook

Such a great loss. I was a student of Bill from 1966 to 1970 when I attended the Philadelphia College of Art first as an Industrial Design major then a Craft Major. My father built the kiln at PCA and was a friend and great admirer of Bill. He came to my father's funeral and described their days together as "a great time". Bill kept in touch with me and I will miss him. He was such an inspiration to me. The world is poorer without him.

Oh my goodness, what a great loss to us all. I feel like the earth that gave him his clay should go quiet for a very long moment to honor his passing and the gifts he gave us. Bill was a guardian angel to me. He showed up in my life at various points and led me into opportunities and adventures. We danced at NCECA conferences. He helped me get accepted at Cranbrook. He introduced me to Penland and joined Meg Peterson and I in teaching at least two summer workshops there. We had great conversations, great letter exchanges, and he called me up once leaving a message on my voicemail saying he was grateful that I showed up in his life. I am deeply grateful that Bill appeared in my life. It would have been a much less bountiful life without him. I am so sad that the planet has lost him. I hope we meet up again in what ever follows this life. I know how much Bill loved Catherine. I can't imagine Bill wanting to stay here long without her. I hope there is mud in his heaven.
I am sending love to Tom and to all of Bill's family. This must be earth shattering for you.
