I met Robert Michael McDannell, McD, 53 years ago when we both arrived at the USMA Preparatory School in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He and I met and became friends that day. McD and I entered West Point, arrived at our First Regiment home in company H-1, and remained friends over that time. McD was selfless, willing to help or participate where he could add the most value; he was someone I have relied on for over 50 years.
McD was dedicated to preserving the ideals of West Point: Duty, Honor, Country, and gave of his time and energy to promote our class and the Academy. After West Point, he served the Army faithfully and gave of himself to improve that Army.
I am personally sad for the loss of this classmate, but I am grateful for our time together, and for his memory. There have been great soldiers to graduate from our Academy, and men and women who are known all over the world. McD was one of those great men who may not be known to the world, but that is known to his class, and especially to his company H-1 classmates that are his friends forever. You will be missed.

I was a West Point classmate of Mike, who was more commonly called McD. He was smart, cheerful, and always had a funny story. Fifty years later, he still remembered details and names that were long forgotten by most of us, and he made us laugh at his recollections. McD's passing leaves a void in our lives but serves as a reminder that we should live every day like it's out last. I salute my special friend and look forward to our final reunion.

Sue and family,
Mike was a wonderful man and always smiling and up for a good time. He was so good and an inspiration to our shared grandchildren. We will sorely miss him as part of our extended family.

I was in the 1/36th FA with 2lt McDannel in 1973-74. I was a draftee who couldn’t wait to get out of the army. Mike was a “gung ho” West Point officer. I and many other of my fellow draftees liked Mike because he was a nice guy. I knew his wife at that time as I was the assistant battalion mail clerk and at times stayed in Augsburg to work the mail and have mail call for spouses. They were a nice couple. I connected with Mike via Facebook a couple of years ago. I was going to relate a story to him of which he was the centerpiece but his early passing I didn’t get the opportunity. He was a nice guy which is high praise coming from a draftee.

I first met Mike when he was the coach/advisor to the squash team at West Point in 1996. Our son Eric was a yearling on that team. We saw Mike several times on 'squash road trips' to Princeton & Annapolis. We did have fun with all those wonderful young men. Later, I was pleasantly surprised to re-acquaint with Mike and wife Sue Grasso at Talamore Country Club.
In 2005 I was working on a picture book later published on the West Point cemetery..featuring many famous graduates and many not so notable, but all honored in this "resting place for warriors"... and their spouses. I encountered this marker on a number of visits, and always paused to reflect. I never knew that about Mike. Anyway, the book is being updated. To be sure, Mike will be included in the "Family" chapter. I'll wait until the marker is updated.
Rest in Peace, Mike.

It was an honor to have known Mike. A great American who gave back to his country. A great Dad, Grandfather and husband.
My memories of Mike will be hanging out at the club @ Friday Night Happy Hours. We did this for many years. Occasional Broadway shows downtown and occasional dinners out with other Talamore couples.
Mike always had a great story and usually a good joke to share.
Always disappointing when you do not get a chance to say goodbye. Many thoughts and prayers go out to Sue and family.
R.I.P. Mike......Marty Boland
