Obituary of The Reverend Dr. Charles H. McClung

CHARLES HARVEY McCLUNG, JR., age 96, former pastor, church executive and Presbyterian educator, died on December 5, 2018. He was the devoted husband of Ruth Voegtly McClung for 72 years. A native of Winterset, Iowa, Charles grew to maturity in Michigan and Indiana, graduating from the University of Indianapolis. He studied for ordination in Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He was a fourth generation clergyman, a loyal Rotarian, and a long-time volunteer hospital chaplain. Charles had retired in 1985 after 24 years in the pulpit of historic Bensalem Presbyterian Church, whose members then voted him Pastor Emeritus for life. For his studies and research in the education of Presbyterian youth, the University of Pittsburgh awarded him a Ph.D. Dr. McClung was next called to serve the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education, headquartered in Philadelphia. Thereafter, he taught briefly at Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University. In retirement, he also served as a Parish Associate at Abington Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and their spouses: Dr. John A. and Mary McClung and Rev. Charles H., III and Joan McClung, and by two cherished grandsons, Timothy McClung and Felix McClung. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Daniel McClung. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 in the Auditorium of Rydal Park, 1515 The Fairway, Rydal, PA, where friends will be received after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Bensalem Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2826 Bristol Road, Bensalem, PA 19020.
