Dear Family,
We are members of the USS Antietam Association and just received notice of John's passing. Our experience with the Antietam was from 1957-1961. A peaceful time. We would like to add condolences to all the family and tell you how moved we were to read about his life. You are all very blessed to have been a part of this man. What a wonderful life he made for everyone. If only more men were like him, this world would be a happier place.

I rode to and from work with John for 13 years, so I got to know him well. His soft-spoken humor and comments on life were worth listening to. In fact, you were wise to listen carefully in order to detect whether he was kidding you. He appreciated the ironies of life and often capitalized on them to pull off stunts in the office. I hung on to some choice examples of John's artistic humor and showed them to him about five years ago. It was fun to see his eyes light up as he recalled his shenanigans. I can't think of a bad memory of John, which is a backhanded way of saying that he looked out for others.
Tuesday mornings before work, a number of fellow employees would gather for prayer. It was encouraging to track John's prayers, since they expressed great thankfulness to God for his grace. John knew what it meant to love God whole heartedly.

Dear Lillian and family,
It was just today that I learned of John being called Home by the Lord Jesus several days ago.
Lillian, as you know, my precious Dora was called Home in April of 2015.
So I am to some extent aware of how your world is beginning to change.
Since it will be difficult for me to be at the funeral, my daughter Becky will represent our family Friday night at Trinity Church. Bob Jr, Stephen, Johnny of our family live in other states and are unable to attend the funeral; but they have asked me to extend their greetings to you, Lillian.
Your John was a great example to me of what true Christian humility is supposed to be. He was one of the kindest and most gracious person I have ever known.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." (Psalm 116:15)
