Obituary of Carrie Bell Horne

Carrie Bell Broxton Horne was born August 12, 1942, the fifth child of Samuel and Carrie Lee Broxton of Tampa, Florida. Carrie is a graduate of Middleton High School, Tampa, Florida. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from Florida A & M University, her Master's Degree in Secondary Education and Administration from Hampton University, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies from Old Dominion University. Carrie began her career in high school education at Warwick High School, Newport News, Virginia. She worked years over twenty-five years at Bethel High School, Hampton, Virginia as a business teacher and assistant principal. Her professional affiliations included membership in the Hampton Association of Curriculum Development, Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Association of Female Executives. She was also a former Vice-President of the Hampton Association of Assistant Principals. Carrie was a member of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church for thirty-nine years and was member of the choir and the Episcopal Church Women. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Hampton Alumnae Chapter; and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society and Peninsula Diabetes Center. Carrie married LTC (Ret.) Francis Horne in1986 and they remained joined together until her passing. She enjoyed accompanying Francis for functions of the Tuskegee Airmen Society. Their loving marriage of twenty-five years was a mutual source of sustenance and joy. She was married to COL (Ret.) Charles A. Wynder, Sr. of Williamsburg, Virginia. Three children were born from their union: Charles A. Wynder, Jr., Carrissa Wynder Sanchez, and Christopher V. Wynder. Carrie and Francis moved to Abington, Pennsylvania in 2010 and lived with her daughter until her passing at home on March 17, 2012. She is survived by her sister, Macie Hardee of Tampa, Florida; her brothers, Eugene Broxton, Ocala, Florida; and Alfonso Broxton, Clearwater, Florida; her daughter, CAPT Carrissa Wynder Sanchez, Abington, Pennsylvania; her sons, LTC Christopher Wynder, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Charles Wynder, Jr., Cambridge, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren, two beloved step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sorority sisters and friends. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 2119 Old Welsh Road, Abington, PA, where friends will be received from 10:00 until 11:00 AM and at a reception after the service. Burial, at a later date, will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
